1. The Problem with Generic Puzzle Sets
Most chess training platforms assign puzzles by rating range — "here are 20 puzzles for 1000–1200 players." The problem is that a 1100-rated player who keeps blundering rooks in open files has a very different need than a 1100-rated player who fails endgame conversions. Generic sets don't fix specific patterns.
2. How Exact Puzzle Matching Works
ZextaOS's puzzle engine works in two modes:
- Blunder-triggered: After a student game, detected blunders are classified by tactical theme. The engine queries the database for puzzles matching that exact theme at the student's current rating band.
- Coach-assigned: Coaches can ask Pawn — "Assign 20 pin and fork puzzles to students rated 800–1000." Pawn selects from the 6M+ database and assigns them to the matching students in one operation.
3. The Puzzle Database
ZextaOS integrates directly with the Lichess puzzle database — over 6 million positions, each tagged with tactical themes (fork, pin, skewer, back rank, deflection, discovered attack, and dozens more) and difficulty ratings calibrated against millions of human solve attempts.
